Intent

In Geography we strive to make our students ‘global citizens’. We want our passion for our subject to inspire the next generation of ‘Geographers’ to make a positive impact upon the world we live in. We see our role as not only to give children the tools to be successful with exams and learning new skills, but to give them the tools and desire to make a lasting impact on the world around us.

Geography is a unique subject that adds understanding to how the world works both in a physical sense and a human sense. Our Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 curriculum is specifically designed to combine that unique interaction with inspiring a love of learning. One that encourages students to take moral, social and environmental responsibility for our planet, starting with our local community. The transferable skills and values that our students will learn will give them the perfect foundation to become that ‘global citizen’. Empowered, students are then tasked with finding a platform to share that vision once they’ve completed the course.

Objectives

We endeavour to create a geography curriculum which:

• Embeds a depth of knowledge of human and natural environments and interactions between them.
• Inspires our students to engage with the world immediately around them and further afield.
• Adds understanding of key issues, geographical process and interactions at a local, national and global scale.
• Develops transferable skills that will give them the tools to become confident, resilient and successful individuals within society.
• Uses Geography’s links to ongoing global issues and current affairs to help learners become more reflective and responsible ‘global citizens’.

Implementation: Design

The Year 7 and 8 curriculum is designed around big Geographical questions such as ‘why does the world map look like it does?’, ‘How has the world changed and how will it continue to do so?’ and ‘what actually IS Geography?’. We give our students the relevant skills needed to access these questions and use thought provoking topics and destinations to inspire a thirst for knowledge within our subject.

In Year 9, we combine skills based lessons with creating two comparable case studies of an HIC and LIC cities, namely Leeds and Lagos. We reinforce understanding of global issues by linking them to our local area.

Year 10 and 11 focuses on the depth of knowledge needed to master the three exam papers  on the GCSE course.  We strive to keep our lessons engaging, interesting and inspiring while ensuring that the exam specification is adhered to.

Each component in the Geography curriculum is designed to link coherently and cumulatively to help learners develop long term knowledge and skills. Many of the skills and issues we ask our students to explore are intrinsically linked the values we as a School embody. We integrate British Values alongside our aforementioned social, moral and environmental responsibility to be a ‘global citizen’.
