Reading is at the heart of everything we do at Royds. As well as literacy being a vital life skill, we are passionate about inspiring a love of reading in school. We work hard to create a culture of reading for pleasure. The Library was recently refurbished with new books purchased and is staffed by a skilled Librarian. There are many special events such as Harry Potter night or participating in Leeds Book Awards and meeting authors.
Students need a reading age of roughly 14 to be able to access a GCSE paper and so ensuring students read at their chronological age is crucial. In Years 7 and 8, students spend one English lesson per week in the Library reading. They follow the Accelerated Reader programme which assesses and tracks their reading age and recommends popular books from authors such as J K Rowling, Jacqueline Wilson or Michael Morpurgo. There are other reading initiatives and interventions that are available.
