On behalf of the staff, students and Governing Body I would like to welcome you to Royds School’s website.
We believe every learner is an individual with a unique personality and characteristics. Inclusion therefore lies at the heart of everything we do. We place great value on preparing our students to thrive in 21st century Britain Our curriculum is built around our #LiveLoveLearn philosophy. We focus on the growth and development of the whole person, a sense of togetherness and empowering everyone as a leader and a learner. The learning our children experience is a broad and balanced diet that provides intellectual, moral, creative and emotional stimulation. We believe our curriculum enables our students to flourish by learning how to take care of themselves mentally and physically in order to fulfil their academic potential, whilst learning how to love in the wider sense and embrace opportunities to live in order to enjoy life to the full. Our students learn how to #LiveLoveLearn in harmony; a philosophy we also apply to our staff.
It seems simple and obvious, but there is nothing more important than the quality of teaching and learning in our classrooms – every minute, every lesson, every day. Staff are learners too. We place significant emphasis on staff development and collaborative partnerships to ensure what goes on in our classrooms is as good as it can be.
Our Class of 2019 achieved some fantastic GCSE outcomes in the Summer. Progress 8 (P8) is a key measure which tracks progress from KS2 (the end of Year 6) to when students leave in KS4 (the end of Year 11). A P8 score of 0 is the national average and means a child is making expected progress from their relative starting point compared to all students nationally.
At Royds, students whose attendance was 98% or above achieved a Progress 8 score of 0.49.
This shows that students who come to Royds and have attendance of 98% or above attain results almost half a grade per subject above students across the country of similar ability. Our 98% cohort have made exceptional progress – we are extremely proud of them. Our message to you is therefore based on facts and very simple: If your child attends school and you work with us to help them grow, our results show our staff have the skills, passion and commitment in abundance to help your child flourish at Royds and beyond.
The Royds’ values permeate all aspects of school life. We expect everyone to be a leader, everyone to be a learner.
Our values are embedded within our rewards scheme and evident in lessons and throughout the school. Visitors to our school are always quick to remark on the positive nature of relationships between students and staff; this was identified as a strength at the last Ofsted inspection and remains an integral feature to the calm and orderly atmosphere in the school. Safeguarding is effective; pupils are safe and they feel safe. ‘The school’s work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare is good because this aspect of school life is given high priority’ (Ofsted 2018).
It is both an honour and a privilege to be the Headteacher at Royds. It is a unique and special school. As our wonderful students often remind me, Royds is like a family. I hope by reading this letter you are encouraged to visit us at our Open Evening on the 3rd to see our school in full flow. You will not be disappointed, but hopefully overwhelmed by the warm welcome you receive from our students and staff and the buzz in our school.
The attached prospectus provides a greater insight into our vision, mission, core values and life in our school. We would be delighted to welcome you to visit at any time to see us in ‘action’, with confidence that you will receive a warm welcome from our staff and students. Should you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us.
