Royds seeks to offer a broad and balanced curriculum that gives every student the opportunity to succeed and be prepared for their future. There are five one-hour periods plus a fifteen minute form time each day.
In Year 7 and Year 8 students follow a common, broad curriculum that prepares them for the rigour and challenge of GCSE and A-Levels. All students study English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, French, RE, Computing, PE, Design Technology, Art, Drama and Music. The class groupings vary between subjects. We aim to keep a student’s timetable stable to support them in forming positive relationships with their teachers and peers however we do review setting periodically and where it would benefit out students we will alter the class groups mid-year.
All students study English Language, English Literature, Maths, at least two GCSEs in Science and at least one of History or Geography and are encouraged to take a modern foreign language. The areas a student studies beyond this will vary. We support students, through our pastoral team and careers advice, in selecting the subjects that prepare students for their future.
Each student is also part of a form group alongside students from their own year. They have a 15-minute form time every day which serves as an opportunity to consider their role as part of the school community and also to raise any concerns they may have with their tutor. These form groups are not generally used for academic tuition.
