Key Stage 3
What will my child be taught?
At Key Stage 3, students are taught and assessed in a range of activities which include games such as football, netball, rugby, basketball, hockey, tennis and rounders. They also complete other activities such as gymnastics, dance, trampolining, health related fitness, athletics and orienteering.

Basic acquisition and replication of motor skills

How will my child be assessed?
Assessment will take place following each activity where each student will achieve a grade based on their knowledge and ability to perform in that activity area. The grade will be based upon departmental criteria of the expected ability level for each year group. Assessment will take the form of a game or final performance where the students will be performing to the best of their ability to show the progress that has been made throughout the unit.
How can I support my child’s learning at home?
Physical Education can be supported at home by assisting in the development of basic motor skills such as throwing and catching. Encouragement and support to join both school and local clubs and teams will also help to aid development. Finally, ensuring your child has all the correct equipment for each lesson / activity will ensure they can fully participate and engage in the learning.
Key Stage 4
What will my child be taught?
Core PE: At Key Stage 4, students complete activities similar to those at Key Stage 3 but there is more emphasis on competition and game play.
Examination PE: Students will also be given the option of taking Sport Science as one of their academic choices. This course is designed for those students who have an interest in the science behind sport and a love of physical education in general. The course delivers a theoretical element which will run alongside a supporting practical aspect.
The theoretical course is split into four units and will cover the following areas:
- Unit R041: Reducing the risk of sports injuries. External examination
- Unit R042: Applying principles of training. Coursework task
- Unit R043: The body’s response to physical activity. Coursework task
- Unit R045: Sports nutrition. Coursework task
How will my child be assessed?
Core PE: Students will be assessed during core PE lessons using the same assessment procedure as in Key Stage 3.
Examination PE: Students will be assessed against a Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria at each unit. The overall grade will then be derived from a culmination of each unit score.
Unit R041 is assessed via an external written exam, with the remaining units being assessed through coursework assignments which are moderated via the exam board.
How can I support my child’s learning at home?
- It will be of benefit to ensure students are prepared for all lessons, and that all homework’s are completed.
- During unit R041, it is essential that the students participate in regular revision at home, and do not leave it until the last moment.
- Ensuring your child has all the correct equipment for each lesson / activity will ensure they can fully participate and engage in the learning.
- Finally, ensure that your child attends school regularly and is punctual. Every day lost in attendance reduces their chance of achieving their best possible outcome.

What will my child be taught?
BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Sport.
How will my child be assessed?
The BTEC course is worth 1.5 A Level qualification and is assessed by a varying amount of techniques including written coursework, presentations, research task and two examined units. Students will be assessed against exam board criteria and are working to achieve either a Pass, Merit or Distinction.
How can I support my child’s learning at home?
BTEC Level 3 sport can be supported at home by ensuring that all work is completed and deadlines are met. Students will be given the opportunity to complete work in their own time which can also be monitored at home.
