Royds School

Medical

Royds is an inclusive community and we welcome students with medical conditions and will support them to access as much of the curriculum to as they are able. We provide all students with medical conditions the same opportunities as others at school. We know that certain medical conditions are serious and potentially life threatening, particularly if poorly managed or misunderstood. Equally we understand the importance of medication being given as instructed by healthcare professionals and parents.

Our Medical and Welfare Officer, Mrs Mullan, has many years of nursing experience and builds very strong relationships with the students and families she works with. She will liaise closely with families and other professionals to make sure students are well cared for and are able to participate in school life as fully as is they are able. She also gives first aid or care to anyone who needs it.

Parents and carers are asked to tell us about medical conditions as soon as possible so that we can begin to support students. We will discuss symptoms, triggers, medication and all areas of managing the condition will be considered to create a healthcare plan that will effectively support them.

Any emotional support that the student may require will be accessed through school nursing team or family support alongside support through the school medical staff, the Haven or pastoral staff.

Parents are asked to liaise closely with the school in the management of conditions. This is particularly relevant to providing information for the school attendance team to explain for any absences for attend medical appointments or periods of illness, and registers will be amended.

We are currently working towards the Good Diabetes Care in School Award. Parents are invited to complete a short survey to contribute to the assessment. The survey is here.
